Detroit pitcher Matt Manning’s right foot was broken Wednesday night when he was hit by a 119.5 mph comebacker from Giancarlo Stanton’s bat in the Tigers’ 4-3 loss to the New York Yankees.
The 25-year-old right-hander will miss the rest of the season. He missed two and a half months earlier this year after being hit in the foot by a comebacker from Toronto’s Alejandro Kirk.
“I was just upset that it was basically the same foot and the same spot,” Manning said. “There’s really nothing positive that comes with it. It’s bad luck. It happens. I think it’s pretty cool to get hit by an MVP. I don’t know.’
Stanton’s hardest-hit ball of the season bounced off Manning’s foot, hit the pitcher in the back, and was hit with a glove by Manning, who made the first pitch for the final out of the first inning. Manning was immediately attended to by athletic trainer and manager AJ Hinch, who said it was a different location.
Manning was hit by Kirk’s 97.3 mph comebacker on April 11 and did not return to the Tigers until June 27. He is 5-4 with a 3.58 ERA in 15 starts.

Matt Manning suffered a broken foot from a hit for the second time this season on Wednesday

The ball came off the bat of Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton, who has hit 22 home runs this year
“You can probably count on one hand how many pitchers have been hit in the foot by line drives this season,” Hinch said.
“He had it twice. “That’s incredibly unfortunate, and if you cut off part of your body you’re likely to end up on the injured list.”
“I feel for him. He’s recovered from a few different things, some of which have nothing to do with the arm, which gives us great confidence that he’ll bounce back from there, but once you’ve done that there’s not much you can do Your delivery and the guy smokes the ball from you.
“You can only hope that the x-ray comes back negative.” This one didn’t.’
