All seven members of the group have agreed to the comeback, which was spearheaded by music mogul Simon Fuller – the man who put them together in 1998 after the Spice Girls, his previous band, fired him as manager.

He personally called each of the seven stars — Rachel Stevens, 44, Tina Barrett, 46, Jon Lee, 40, Paul Cattermole, 45, Bradley McIntosh, 41, Jo O’Meara, 43, and Hannah Spearritt, 40 — for suggestions to make the project and made it clear that it would only work if everyone agreed.

Their comeback is expected to be announced with great fanfare in the coming weeks, where they will reveal the details of the reunion.

They are planning a major tour for the summer, although they are debating whether it will have to be postponed until Christmas due to O’Meara’s back injury, which has required her to undergo four surgeries to remove part of a herniated disc.

Friends say she is currently having difficulty walking but is hoping for a full recovery.

A source close to the project said: “Simon Fuller saw the value in it, S Club 7 had a huge following of all ages that he thinks will want to see for nostalgia reasons.

“Their songs were so upbeat and funny that it’s a huge commercial opportunity for all of them, especially Simon.”

Fuller is understood to have arrived on the scene after being unable to headline a 25th anniversary celebration with the Spice Girls.

S Club 7’s comeback was not without its difficulties – Fuller and the other band members spent months tracking down Lee, who had cut ties with all of them and lived a quiet life off the grid, people close to him said.

Fuller put S Club 7 together after being fired from the Spice Girls over “creative differences” following an alleged relationship with band member Emma Bunton – which both have denied.

They made their mark on the BBC show Miami 7 and a year later in 1999 their debut hit Bring It All Back hit number one. They enjoyed three more and cracked America with their hit song “Never Had A Dream Come True.”

However, in 2002, Cattermole left the band. A year later, they decided to disband the group, and Fuller started a follow-up project, S Club Juniors. Stevens continued her solo career, finishing runner-up on Strictly Come Dancing in 2008.
