Thousands of families are entitled to free support from local government – how you can apply for it

Thousands of families are entitled to free local council support worth up to £500 through a community support scheme.

By using the government’s Budget Support Fund to support vulnerable households, municipalities are free to allocate these funds as they see fit, which means they vary from country to country.

Depending on the size of the catchment area, number of inhabitants and needs, each municipality receives a different share of the financing.

Support varies from community to community, and some may give out energy vouchers or free cash grants instead of supermarket vouchers.

The type of help each municipality offers is often described on their website so you can check what help is available and how exactly you can get it.

Which supermarkets the vouchers apply to varies by municipality as some only issue vouchers to Asda, Morrisons or Tesco whilst others offer a wider choice with vouchers for Aldi, Asda, M&S, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose.

Who is eligible for free support from their community?

Eligibility criteria vary by council; For example, some support households that receive housing benefit or council tax support.

Most municipalities indicate on their website who can redeem the vouchers.

Some councils will contact eligible households directly, while others will require you to apply yourself online or by phone.

Eligible families can only claim the vouchers once and only if they have not received one from the previous household support fund in the past year.

What do councils offer eligible households?

Luton Borough Council gives out supermarket vouchers as part of its household support scheme, with eligible residents able to apply for vouchers of between £100 and £500.

They state that they will only accept one claim per household and will, after reviewing your claim, tell you the exact amount you are entitled to.

Plymouth City Council is also giving out supermarket vouchers worth up to £180 to spend at either Asda, Morrisons or Tesco.

As with Luton, only one application can be made per household and will only be approved if you did not receive support from the previous household support fund between July 6, 2022 and November 27, 2022.

Camden and Ealing Boroughs make supermarket vouchers available to households with minor children who receive housing benefit or council tax support or are entitled to free school meals.

In Camden, eligible families will receive vouchers worth £15 for each child living in the home in February 2023 and in Ealing households they will receive £15 per child in February and a further £30 per child in March.

North Yorkshire County Council is offering vouchers worth up to £325 to spend in Aldi, Asda, M&S, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose supermarkets.

The Council has sent letters to all eligible households and they have until Wednesday 15 February to select their e-voucher on the North Yorkshire Council Household Support Fund website using the personalized code provided in the letter.

How can you claim the support and when is the deadline?

If you believe that YOU are eligible to apply for the Household Support Fund, you must apply as soon as possible on your municipality’s website or by phone – if you have not already received a letter from your municipality.

Assistance will be given on a first come, first served basis, meaning the sooner a claim is made, the better chance it has of being successful.

The deadline for councils to pay out the final cash support is March 31, 2023.

The government has said that all budget support funds must be spent before that deadline and the money cannot be carried over to future spending.
