They’re known as the thin blue line – but many cops are anything but, and need oversized uniforms to get the job done.
Figures show that over the past year, armed forces have ordered thousands of trousers with waists measuring 40 inches or larger — some as large as 56 inches.
Many of the uniforms are labeled “patrol” or “deployment,” meaning they’re for bobbies on assignment.
The NHS says men with a waist size over 37 inches and women over 31.5 inches are more likely to have obesity-related problems.

The Met’s chief of police, Sir Mark Rowley, said “a large proportion” of his officers were “unfit for use” due to health and performance issues.
Last month, Met Police Chief Sir Mark Rowley said that “a large proportion” of his officers were “unfit for use” due to health and performance issues.
Tam Fry, chair of the National Obesity Forum, said: “Anyone who serves in an emergency medical service should be fit for their purpose. Enlightened commanders who want to keep their staff will send them on a weight management course.”
Freedom of information requests from The Mail on Sunday show that the Met ordered 7,343 pants with a waistband of 40 inches or larger, even up to 56 inches, last year. Greater Manchester Police ordered 837 trousers with more than 40 waists, including 185 for female officers.
1,320 trousers with a waistband of 40 inches or more were ordered from the West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Humberside Armed Forces.
Devon and Cornwall Police ordered 330 pairs of 40″ or larger, while Avon and Somerset Police ordered 245 with a waist of 40″ or larger, including 12 pairs for officers with a waist greater than 50″.
Cumbria Police ordered 91 pairs with a waist of 40 inches or more, with busts measured at 48 inches.
Dorset ordered 65 trousers over 40 inches in waist.
Annual fitness tests became mandatory for police in England and Wales in 2014. Officers tasked with detaining suspects are required to complete a 525 meter pendulum walk test in 3 minutes 35 seconds.
Officers who fail the third attempt may face disciplinary action.
