Todd Boehly is on the verge of appointing ex-RB Leipzig boss Christopher Vivell as technical director

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly ‘joins the hiring of ex-RB Leipzig boss Christopher Vivell as the club’s new technical director after being given a work permit’… with the German behind Erling Haaland’s signing at Red Bull Salzburg

  • Christopher Vivell has been with Chelsea in an advisory capacity since October
  • The 36-year-old left RB Leipzig back in October citing disagreements

Todd Boehly and Chelsea are close to formally appointing former RB Leipzig technical director Christopher Vivell at Stamford Bridge.

Vivell, who oversaw the signing of Erling Haaland and Karim Adeyemi at RB Salzburg, will oversee the Blues’ ongoing transfer policy as the club are already being linked with a new striker in the form of Molde’s David Datro Fofana.

He has been in an advisory capacity at Stamford Bridge since October but after being granted a work permit he is set to be officially called up to the role, according to the Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Vivell is set to become the latest piece of the puzzle created by Chelsea’s new American co-owner and his backroom staff during a transition period.

The club’s transfer activity has come under scrutiny and to many appeared wanton and rash given the amounts of money spent in the last summer window.

Boehly will be happy to finally find the right man for Petr Cech, who left after three years in the summer after Michael Edwards and Christoph Freund had already failed.

In their first window of the Boehly-Clearlake era, Chelsea spent £271m on Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Kouliably, Wesley Fofana, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Marc Cucurella, Carney Chukwuemeka and brought in Denis Zakaria on loan.

Furthermore, on the evening of his 100th game as manager of the club, Boehly quickly got the better of Champions League manager Thomas Tuchel after a 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb.

Southampton’s Head of Senior Recruitment Joe Shields has notably been hired as the club’s new Co-Director of Recruitment and Talent.

Shields was instrumental in acquiring starlets Gavin Bazunu, Romeo Lavia and Sekou Mara at St. Mary’s in the summer.

Vivell’s arrival signals another step towards stability for Chelsea, but also signals an intention to sign young talent and give them the opportunity to develop at the club, rather than signing already established superstars as often as in recent years.

The 36-year-old left RB Leipzig in October citing disagreements after joining in 2020.

A product of the Red Bull system, Vivell joined RB Salzburg in 2015 as head of scouting before spending three years as the sports coordinator of the 16-time Austrian champion before moving to Leipzig.

He’s not the only figure to move from east Germany to west London, Christopher Nkunku has already agreed a deal to join Chelsea in the summer.
