Tottenham ‘keep an eye on Brentford’s David Raya’ as they search for a replacement for Hugo Lloris

Tottenham are “keeping an eye on Brentford goalkeeper David Raya” as they look for a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris… and “a move could come as early as the summer” as the Spaniard’s contract expires

  • Tottenham are reportedly considering a move for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya
  • The north London side will be looking for a replacement for Hugo Lloris
  • Lloris, who just turned 36, has a contract with the club until 2024
  • Raya still has 18 months of contract, a change is possible in the summer

Tottenham are keeping tabs on David Raya as they search for a Hugo Lloris replacement, according to a report.

2018 World Cup captain and 2022 finalist Lloris has just turned 36 after playing for Spurs since 2012 and more mistakes are creeping into his game despite the France international signing a two-year contract extension last year would have.

According to The Telegraph, Raya is top of the list of long-term substitutes for the north London club for Lloris, who could soon leave Tottenham, and a deal could be struck for the Spaniard as early as the summer transfer window.

Spurs are believed not to want to add a goalkeeper to their rank in the January window as the club and manager Antonio Conte are happy to settle with Lloris for now.

A plan is to be drawn up to replace Lloris, who has made 439 appearances for the club since joining from Lyon for £11million, with backup goalkeeper Fraser Forster, aged 34, also coming towards the end of his career.

Young goalkeepers Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman, both 24, are unlikely to be ready in time to step up.

Raya has made 141 appearances for Brentford since joining from Blackburn in 2019 and has become a key member of a Bees side that continue to impress in the Premier League under Thomas Frank.

At just 27, Raya’s best years may still be ahead and he was in Spain’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar after earning two caps for his country.

He has just 18 months left on his contract at Brentford and if he refuses to sign a new contract, Tottenham could find things easier to negotiate in the summer.

Jordan Pickford is reportedly another option for Tottenham, although they will focus on using a full-back and attacking player in the January window.
