Tottenham ‘miss on deadline day move for Udinese winger Gerard Deulofeu’

Tottenham ‘miss a deadline-day move to bring Udinese winger Gerard Deulofeu back to the Premier League’ as the former Everton and Watford star suffered a knee injury

  • Tottenham missed out on a move on transfer deadline day for Gerard Deulofeu
  • The Udinese winger attracted interest from both Spurs and Aston Villa
  • A deal was close for the 28-year-old but he suffered a knee injury last month

Tottenham have reportedly missed a transfer deadline day for former Everton and Watford winger Gerard Deulofeu.

The 28-year-old was closely linked with Aston Villa during the January transfer window before Spurs considered a move as they were keen to bring in reinforcements.

Spurs managed to sign Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon for £42m while mutually terminating Matt Doherty’s contract so the right-back could join Atletico Madrid on a free transfer.

However, boss Antonio Conte was keen to add Spanish star Deulofeu to bolster his attacking options before the window slams shut.

A deal was said to be close to completion before Deulofeu suffered a knee injury last month Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

Romano said on his YouTube channel: “We know Tottenham have been looking for an attacking player.

‘Nicolo Zaniolo, then they decided to loan out Danjuma as a big chance. But I can tell you – and it’s an exclusive name – that Tottenham are considering a move for Gerard Deulofeu.

‘Udinese player, he’s doing amazing in Serie A and had a fantastic first part of the season. He has already proven himself in the Premier League.

“He played for Everton, for Watford. In the past also for Barcelona and AC Milan. So an important player with good experience who is ready to make a difference. Also very appreciated by the board, but what happened?

“Deulofeu was very close to Tottenham. From what I’ve heard, the deal was almost done for Deulofeu to join Tottenham.

“But what happened is Gerard Deulofeu has an injury, a serious injury, so just before he joined Tottenham it was no longer available on the market.”

The injury ruined any chance of Deulofeu leaving Udinese, at least until the summer when he expected to attract more interest.

The winger’s contract expires in the summer of 2024 – so Tottenham and even Aston Villa could rekindle their interest.

The 28-year-old has registered seven assists and three goals so far this season, with Udinese pushing for European places in Serie A.

Deulofeu – formerly of Everton and Watford – scored 13 goals last season and is said to be open to an away move.

Udinese had valued Deulofeu at around £17million when interest such as AC Milan and Napoli were expressed late last season.
