Troy Deeney insists he knew Harry Kane would miss the second penalty that saw England eliminated from the World Cup in the quarter-finals.

The Birmingham striker was one of millions to watch as Kane put England back in the game against France with a stunning penalty.

However, the Three Lions skipper missed an opportunity to equalize again as he slammed his second penalty over the bar, allowing Gareth Southgate to end the tournament in a 2–1 loss to the reigning champions.

Deeney, who was a consistent penalty taker throughout his career, was confident Kane would miss the second penalty when he saw him advance to take the kick.

In his column in The Sun, Deeney said: “I’ve been taking penalties for years and like anyone who gets the job done regularly I’ve missed a few.

Watching England lose to France in the quarter-finals of the World Cup, I thought Kane looked laser focused after that first penalty, although there was a long delay and he decided to rediscover the ball.

Of course, he hammered it home branded.

But second, something was wrong with his breathing and his eyes were everywhere. I wasn’t surprised when he drove it.’

Kane has taken 21 penalties for England and scored 17 of them, giving him an 81% conversion rate. Those goals added to his 53 total goals for his county, a record shared with Wayne Rooney.

However, Deeney believes that despite Kane’s exemplary penalty record, when you have a chance to score two penalties in the same game it’s always difficult.

He added: “What he probably hasn’t done is think about the prospect of a second penalty in the same game.

Only two or three times in my career have I taken two penalties in the same game.

Just a few months ago in Hull I took a penalty and then lofted the second.

Getting a second penalty can really mess you up.

And I’m talking about Hull versus Birmingham in the Championship when we won 2-0.

Not England versus France in a World Cup quarter-finals late in the game when Kane would surely have thought, “If I miss this, we’re out.”

The England skipper is known for his rigorous penalty-taking regime but he will not be back in contention until Spurs resume their Premier League campaign against Brentford on Boxing Day.
