Twitter suspended journalists from CNN and the New York Times who covered Elon Musk

BREAKING: Twitter suspends journalists from CNN and New York Times who covered Elon Musk
- A number of journalists who have covered Elon Musk and Twitter were banned from the social media company on Thursday
- New York Times journalist Ryan Mac was banned along with Washington Post’s Drew Harwell, CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan and Kieth Olbermann
- It remains unclear why exactly these journalists were suspended
Twitter has blocked the profiles of a number of high-profile journalists who have covered the billionaire and the social media company.
Journalists The New York Times’ Ryan Mac, The Washington Post’s Drew Harwell, CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan, Mashable’s Matt Binder, The Intercept’s Michah Lee, and Aaron Rupar, Tony Webster, and Keith Olberman all found their Twitter accounts on Thursday locked.
Musk’s latest move comes a day after he suspended an account that was tracking his private plane @ElonJet, despite stating a month ago that his “commitment to freedom of expression” was so serious he would leave it alone .
Some of the journalists are believed to have been banned for posting links to Mastadon – a platform similar to Twitter – where @ElonJet has migrated after yesterday’s ban. Mastadon’s Twitter account was also suspended on Thursday.
This is an evolving story.

Harwell’s account was suspended shortly after he tweeted about the suspension of Mastadon’s Twitter account. In that tweet, Harwell pointed out that @ElonJet had switched to Mastadon.
After Harwell was suspended, Olbermann also posted a link to Mastadon and implored others to do the same.
The New York Times said Mac Twitter gave him no explanation for his suspension, according to NBC News.
“We hope that all journalists’ accounts will be recovered and that Twitter will provide a satisfactory explanation for this action,” the Times told the outlet.
According to NBC journalist Ben Collins, Rupar said he had “no idea” why he was suspended.
Each of the other banned journalists had recently reported on Musk.

Both Elon Musk and Twitter have remained silent on the matter, with the only communication from the billionaire since news of the suspension was a declaration of love to Barbara Streisand.
“I love Barbara Streisand lol,” he tweeted Thursday night.
Musk’s crusade against @ElonJet – which draws its information from publicly available records – was ignited this week after Musk claimed a stalker jumped on the hood of a car carrying his son.
Explaining the ordeal, Musk said, “Last night the car with Lil X in LA was being followed by a maniac stalker (who thought it was me) who later stopped the car from moving and climbed onto the hood.”
“Legal action is being taken against Sweeney and organizations that have supported harm to my family,” he added, referring to Jack Sweeney, creator of @ElonJet.
It’s unclear how Musk linked @ElonJet to the stalking incident, which didn’t appear to involve his private plane in any way.
