Two Britons are said to be among the four people killed after two helicopters crashed in mid-air near Sea World on Australia’s Gold Coast.

The planes were flying over a sandbar when they collided with each other shortly after takeoff today.

The incident, which took place in front of hundreds of horrified tourists, resulted in one of the helicopters falling upside down, killing the pilot and three passengers.

Three other passengers on board, believed to be a woman and two children, were hospitalized with serious injuries.

Despite the injuries to the occupants, the pilot of the other helicopter was able to make a controlled landing after the cockpit was hit by the collision.

The incident happened Monday afternoon at Sea World Resort, which offers joy flights for people wanting an aerial view of the coast.

Video footage from the moments before the crash shows the two helicopters running towards each other as horrified witnesses shouted “No!” when they realize they are going to collide.

One family described how “the pilot and two elderly people in the front, a lady and a young boy next to her in the back and another person next to them” boarded the plane.

Daily Mail Australia reports that the pilot who died was Ash Jenkinson, the chief pilot for Sea World Helicopters.

The Foreign Office has said two of the fatalities are British nationals and is supporting their families.

An FCDO spokesman told the Mirror: “We are supporting the families of two British nationals who have died in Australia and are in contact with local authorities.”
