The New York Red Bulls have lost another captain as defender Aaron Long leaves the club for defending MLS Cup champions Los Angeles FC.

On January 3, the club announced that Long would not be returning, with a tweet captioned: “Good luck in your next chapter Aaron. It was an honor to be a part of your journey.”

Long later, he posted a thank you note to Red Bulls supporters, saying: “Thank you! The last seven years have been better than I could have ever imagined. Thanks to the club for believing in me.

“Thank you to the fans who supported us through the ups and downs. Many thanks to the trainers and employees who have accompanied us on this journey. Last but not least, thank you to my amazing teammates who made my journey so special and made me the player I am today. I’m really grateful and I wish the boys and the club all the best.

On January 4, it was announced that Long was making the move to the defending champions with a video from both the player and the club.

Long grew up in Oak Hills, CA – over 80 miles from Banc of California Stadium, which will now serve as his new home.

The Red Bulls have a leadership problem both on and off the field. Since winning the Supporters Shield in 2015 under Mike Petke, the team has gone through four managers and five captains.

Of the previous five players to wear the armband, Dax McCarty was traded to Chicago Fire, Sacha Kljestan was traded to Orlando City, Luis Robles was not re-signed, and Sean Davis made a freelance move to Nashville.

Long made club history by becoming the first player to move from the second team – the New York Red Bulls II – to the first team before becoming club captain.

Long was called up to the US men’s national team for the 2022 World Cup – but could not report an assignment.

He’s been capped 29 times with the USMNT and has scored three goals in that span.
