Victoria Derbyshire, 54, married her partner Mark Sandell after battling breast cancer

Victoria Derbyshire has revealed she has married her longtime partner Mark Sandell as they wanted a “massive party to celebrate” following her battle with breast cancer.

The Newsnight presenter, 54, gushed about her radio producer Beau, saying he was “amazing” during her illness.

Victoria, who is now embracing her 50s, is also hoping to be considered for the latest series of Strictly of Dancing.

The couple, who share sons Oliver, 18, and Joe, 15, married in 2018 after the doctor gave the TV presenter the all-clear.

After 301 days of treatment, which included six chemotherapy sessions and 30 radiation therapy sessions, the mother-of-two was given the all-clear with an 11 percent chance of the cancer coming back.

She told Woman & Home: “Mark has really stepped up. He was incredible. He did everything to take care of me and the boys.

“We got married after I got the all clear. We wanted to have a huge party and celebrate with our boys, Mark’s daughter – my stepdaughter Lizzie – and with our family and friends. It was wonderful,’

She went on to reveal her secret to a happy relationship, was laughter: “Mark is really funny and that’s just a joy.”

She went on to discuss the death of Dame Deborah James who sadly lost her own battle with cancer in June 2022 at the age of just 40.

“The day she [Deborah] died, my mother texted me, ‘Vic I love you so much, I really feel for Deborah’s family.’ Because I was lucky’.

“None of us know how long we have left, so I want to have incredible life experiences and enjoy them.”

One thing she’s hoping to try is strut her stuff to the Glitterball trophy as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing.

She said: “If asked to do Strictly – which I honestly don’t believe – I would definitely consider it. I’m not sure if it would be right because I do Newsnight.

“But hey, I did ‘I’m a Celebrity…’ two years ago and now I’m doing ‘Newsnight’ and people are cool with it. Nowadays people are less likely to label you. ‘

She then went on to talk about aging, saying she’s “hugging her 50s” now.

“My sister had a 50th birthday party in August and she had a chalkboard with pictures of us when we were younger and my god I looked ridiculous!”

She laughed: “No fashion sense and stupid makeup. I hope I’ve learned to look a little less silly and a little more elegant.”
