Virginia Gov. Glenn Younkin faces claims he is planning an attack on the White House

Not a really convincing denial, Glenn! Virginia’s anti-Woke GOP governor says his focus is on his state “right now” when asked about claims he’s planning the 2024 White House run

  • Glenn Youngkin, 56, was elected governor of Virginia in November 2021, fighting on an “anti-woke” platform and walking a fine line with Trump
  • Youngkin carefully cultivated MAGA support while keeping the Never Trump Republicans at his side, earning him kudos as a future star
  • On Thursday, Youngkin spoke to Fox News host Martha MacCallum, who asked him about a possible run in 2024
  • Youngkin diplomatically responded that he was focusing on Virginia “for now” — but his response will surely be of interest to rivals like Trump and Ron DeSantis

The Virginia governor has refused to rule out a 2024 White House run, insisting his focus “for now” is on his state, but admits he’s honored to be considered a contender will.

Glenn Youngkin, a 56-year-old private equity executive worth $300 million, was elected last year and took office in January.

Youngkin’s campaign focused on countering the “wake” policy, with a heavy emphasis on culture wars. He walks a delicate line, keeping Donald Trump’s supporters on the side while managing to garner support from mainstream Republicans — and is therefore considered a rising star.

On Thursday, Fox News host Martha MacCallum asked Youngkin about a possible presidential bid, and Youngkin said he was flattered to be in the running.

“Right now, there’s a 100 percent opportunity for me to focus on Virginia and deliver as governor,” he said.

“That’s where my attention is focused. And I think that’s what Virginians want me to do. You chose me to lead the change. You elected me to move Virginia forward. And that is exactly what we are doing.”

Youngkin will be out of work by 2026 — Virginia only allows its governors a four-year term — which has only heightened expectations.

He said he was surprised by the prospect.

“Two years ago I was a private individual and had just quit my dream job,” he said.

“Forty years ago, as a kid who needed a job, I washed dishes and took out garbage. And that even my name came up is so humbling.’

Donald Trump has already announced his intention to retake the White House, and other possible contenders include Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Youngkin, who was supported by Trump but cleverly avoided associating too closely with him, said that Trump still has a “major influence” in the Republican Party but is not alone in power.

“I think part of the process over the next few years is to sort that out,” he said.

“My job today is to deliver for the Virginians, and I think the big message for any Republican candidate is to deliver.”

He said he was disappointed with the results of the midterm elections – which saw many of the Trump-backed candidates lose – but was positive about the future.

Youngkin said the election showed that voters across the state and across the country “want to look forward, not back.”

He insisted that Republican governors who “delivered exceptional results” would be rewarded by voters.

Youngkin scored his own victory last week when the Loudoun County school district superintendent was fired and then accused of covering up a school sexual assault scandal.

Loudoun County has become the epicenter of parental protests against “woke” school policies, and Youngkin campaigned with promises that he would force the entire school board to resign and seek re-election.
