A grandfather and Liberal Party volunteer was allegedly attacked in a “politically motivated” attack after he confronted a man for removing a candidate’s campaign placard.

Hazelbrook cafe owner Kevin Birch, 53, told Daily Mail Australia while driving in the Blue Mountains with his wife and daughter he bumped into a man he claimed had posters for the liberal Macquarie -Candidate Sarah Richards damaged.

When Mr Birch questioned the man, who was wearing a red sweater, he said: “I don’t like Sarah Richards”.

He offered to replace Ms. Richards’ sign if Mr. Birch would let him drive away in his white Nissan.

As a second car pulled up, a man in a white hoodie approached Mr Birch and allegedly punched him in the face through his open car window.

When Mr Birch’s wife Maree called the police so they could report the incident and the license plates of the two cars, he claims he was attacked again – this time with a blow to the head.

The alleged beating knocked his glasses off his head and left him with a swollen jaw.

“It was a complete ambush,” Mr Birch, who is a Liberal Party member and has been a volunteer for three years, told Daily Mail Australia.

Mr Birch claims he was attacked by three people in a short space of time – the man in a white hoodie, the man who removed the signs and a woman who was escorting them.

When he grabbed the second man’s white hoodie, the woman is said to have participated in the attack on him.

Mr Birch’s life was also allegedly threatened during the incident.

He claimed the assaults happened in front of his 12-year-old daughter and his wife, both of whom were in his car.

After the incident, the three fled the scene.

He suffered swelling in his jaw and bruises on his knees and ankles in the alleged attack.

Mr Birch added that he believes the incident was “politically motivated”.

NSW Police released a statement confirming a 25-year-old Lawson man was charged with assault and repeating Mr Birch’s claims.

Police said a “verbal altercation” initially broke out when Mr Birch confronted a man removing a political party sign from the ground in Lawson, prompting an alleged assault.

“Following an investigation, a 25-year-old man was arrested in Lawson [on Thursday] and charged with assault and assault,” the police statement said.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear in Katoomba Magistrates Court on Monday 6 June.

Police confirmed that “an investigation is continuing to locate the other man involved.”

Daily Mail Australia contacted Sarah Richards for comment.
