Wayne Rooney is believed to be a possible target for Birmingham should John Eustace leave the club.

The former England captain is currently manager of Washington club DC United in the United States but has experience managing English football thanks to a stint in charge of the troubled Derby in 2021-22.

Birmingham – part-owned by former NFL star Tom Brady – have enjoyed a strong start to the season under Eustace as they head into the international break.

Eustace has done a solid job since taking charge more than a year ago, helping the Blues survive last season comfortably despite significant off-pitch uncertainty and overseeing a promising start to the new season among the club’s American owners.

As such, there is currently no indication that Eustace will be fired.

Brady is among the new bosses, and the seven-time Super Bowl winner was there for the home game against Leeds in August.

Eustace signed a contract until 2025, replacing Lee Bowyer in the summer of 2022. He was a target for Swansea in the closing season before the club appointed Michael Duff. He is also a possible candidate for Rangers should they sack Michael Beale.

Rooney’s contract with DC United expires in December and on September 3 he expressed frustration at the lack of progress in contract negotiations.

He told the Washington Post, “I’m a bit disappointed and frustrated that there hasn’t been any contact for two months.”

“We asked for a new deal. We can sit down and talk about it. We did not get an answer.

“Either way, I can take any situation. I was hoping we’d at least talked about it. That was not the case.

“It’s frustrating because either way I’d rather know what the plan is because we have to plan for next season.” We’ve got to do it sooner rather than later. The fact that we didn’t get a reply probably indicates one thing, but I’m sure they will have their reasons. So I’ll wait and see.’

DC United currently sit ninth in the 15-team Eastern Conference, with the top nine clubs qualifying for the season-ending play-offs. The final round of the regular seasons will take place on October 21st.

When asked about his future with the Blues last April – before the takeover – Eustace said: “It’s been great, I work for a fantastic football club.” We’ve created a really good environment here. It was great to come in, work and see the players develop.

“We want to build something special and there’s still a lot of hard work ahead of us, but we’re all ready to do it.”

It’s starting!
