Brits can expect a very wet and miserable bank holiday weekend as the Met Office warns there is “no sign” of hot weather ahead.

Today’s showers, some of which could be thunderstorm-like, are expected to continue, with “heavy” rain forecast for Saturday and Sunday.

Tomorrow there will be a mix of sunny spells and showers, with a risk of hail across the north and west of the UK.

This comes as another yellow weather warning was issued this morning, with potential disruption to roads and public transport due to water and hail.

Most of the country basked in glorious sunshine and warm weather earlier this week – but now there’s little hope this will continue, as the Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist Steven Keates said over the weekend: “Showers never get too far away be.”

For those looking forward to staying over the summer bank holiday, no sunbathing is permitted as temperatures will be ‘average’ with highs of 20°C and 21°C.

Cardiff is looking cooler with temperatures expected to stay around 18C over the weekend. In Scotland, average temperatures in Edinburgh are between 17 and 19°C.

Mr Keates of the Met Office said: “While weekend showers are never too far away there will still be drier spells and where there are downpours in the south on Sunday it should feel quite comfortable.”

“Areas to the southeast will see fewer showers with more light or sunny intervals on Saturday and Sunday, although temperatures are likely to remain average for the time of year.” Areas further north and west will experience more frequent rainfall, some of which will be violent, and which at times will extend south into central England and Wales on Saturday and Sunday.”

As yesterday looked like the last day of summer we hope those traveling to Reading and Leeds festival packed their wellies.

There is a risk of thunderstorms in Reading today, but a drier evening is forecast for tonight.

A day of sunshine and showers is also expected in Leeds tomorrow, with patchy rain continuing through the weekend.
