William and Harry ‘will pay their own respect to Princess Diana’

Twenty-five years after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, much has changed in the lives of her two sons.

Princes William and Harry were just 15 and 12 years old when their mother tragically died in a car crash in a Parisian underpass in the early hours of August 31, 1997.

The brothers sought comfort in one another during their difficult teenage years and beyond following Diana’s death.

Harry said of William when he turned 21, “Of course we’ve been close since our mother died, but he’s the only person on this earth that I really really… we can talk about anything.”

A quarter of a century later, the royal brothers – the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex – are now grown men, fathers and husbands – but their once close relationship has changed beyond recognition, marred by a long-lasting rift.

Harry’s falling out with William dates back to before his 2018 marriage to American-born former Suits actress Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex.

The Duke was apparently angered by what he described as his brother’s “snobbish” attitude towards his bride after William asked if he should rush himself.

The Sussexes later quit as senior working royals after struggling with royal life and relocated to California.

After the Megxit, in a prime-time TV interview with Oprah Winfrey, they accused the royal family of racism and the institution of not helping Meghan when she was having suicidal thoughts.

The Duchess of Cambridge has been publicly singled out by Meghan for allegedly making her cry in the run-up to the wedding.

Harry said he loves William to the core and they’ve been through hell together, but he added: “The relationship is empty at the moment. And hopefully time will heal everything.’

William was furious that private family matters were being made public.

But Robert Lacey, author of Battle Of Brothers: William, Harry And The Inside Story Of A Family In Turmoil, said there had been problems much earlier, including in 2005 when Harry was convicted of calling himself a Nazi for a ” Colonialists and Natives”. Party.

Harry was accompanied by William as he selected the costume at a costume shop, but there was no criticism of his older brother in the press, as Harry was impressed by his own role as “the monarchy’s institutional scapegoat”.

Mr Lacey wrote: “The young prince began to reassess his older brother’s involvement and the injustice of William’s subsequent rose-scented appearance. Harry felt alienated.

“Friends remember ‘No-Speaks’ and a pretty serious rift between the two brothers at the time.”

Mr Lacey suggested Diana raise her sons with a ‘talk to each other, for God’s sake!’ Approach and would have wanted them to end their ongoing “social distancing”.

Harry has admitted he turned to alcohol and drugs as he coped with the trauma of his mother’s death.

His openness about how he struggled to cope and came close to a “complete breakdown” after not speaking out about his loss has been praised by mental health charities.

On the 20th anniversary of her death in 2017, William and Harry stood side by side as they viewed the tributes paid to the princess at their former home, Kensington Palace.

They celebrated the occasion by commissioning a statue in her memory.

But amid the Megxit and Oprah controversies, they only reunited briefly in the summer of 2021 to finally unveil the bronze tribute, and went their separate ways immediately after.

Harry and Meghan are due to visit the UK in September and are expected to stay at Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor estate, just a few minutes’ walk from the Cambridge family’s new home, Adelaide Cottage.

However, a rapprochement seems unlikely, not least due to the looming prospect of the release of Harry’s all-encompassing memoir, as the couples won’t be spending time together during the Sussexes’ hurricane.

“Granny Diana” has five grandchildren she never met – William and Kate’s children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, and Harry and Meghan’s children, Archie and Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor.

The Cambridge children make cards for the Princess every year on Mother’s Day, with Charlotte writing poignantly, as seen in pictures released last year: ‘Love you very much. Dad misses you.”
