If that didn’t get the free world to sit up and take notice, her performance at her first X Games 12 months later forced them to.
Gu landed gold in two events – superpipe and slestyle – as well as a bronze medal in the Big Air competition. As a result, she became the first Chinese athlete to win a gold medal, and the first rookie to win three medals.

Once again, she came away with two golds, as well as another bronze, becoming the first skier to win multiple titles at the same World Championships when she competed in halfpipe, slestyle and Big Air – also three in which she will compete in Beijing. Pushing boundaries is something that comes naturally to her. She did so again last November, pulling the world’s first 1440 corkscrew.
