Wout Weghorst revealed he and his girlfriend were “a little SHOCKED” when they heard Man United made a move to bring him back to the Premier League after he flopped during a six-month stint at relegated Burnley
- Wout Weghorst will play the second half of the season for United on loan
- It comes after an ineffective stint at Burnley last year when they were relegated
- Weghorst admitted his girlfriend was surprised at United’s interest in him
- But he is likely to play a role if the club put light on centre-forwards
Wout Weghorst has admitted he and his girlfriend Nikki van Esch were “a bit shocked” when they learned of Manchester United’s interest in loaning him out.
The Dutch striker found success at Turkish club Besiktas but only scored two goals in 20 games for Burnley as the club were relegated from the Premier League.
Despite his struggles at Burnley, Erik ten Hag has signed the former Claret as a 9th-placed assist for the remainder of the season following the acrimonious departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

He admitted his girlfriend Nikki van Esch was “a bit shocked” when she heard about United’s interest in him
“Over a week ago,” Weghorst said when asked when he’d heard United were keen to sign him.
“My agent actually called me for the first time and I was with my girl and she was a little bit shocked because she saw my face and I was like, ‘Oof.'”
The 30-year-old, who joined Burnley for £12million last winter as the club looked to survive relegation to the Championship, also admitted his first Premier League spell didn’t go to plan as he prepared for a new one Challenge prepared with United.
“I also have previous Premier League experience – it wasn’t as successful as I had hoped – and I’m really waiting and looking forward to returning here because I think it’s still the biggest competition in the world and now I am “I will play for one of the biggest clubs in England,” he said.
Weghorst only scored twice for Burnely in the league when they were relegated last season
‘For me, [to play for] The biggest club is of course great and as I’ve always said, as a footballer and also as a person, on the stage I’m on now [experience] that i have, i’m ready for it. This is of course the right moment to take on this great challenge.”
“For me it wasn’t ready, it wasn’t ready,” he continued of playing in the Premier League.
“It didn’t work out like I hoped the first time around and I’m really hungry to show myself and help the team. Of course we are now on a very good path. Things have been going very positively here over the past few weeks, months actually, and I just want to do my part and do my best and give everything for the club and I’m trying to be a part of the success [direction] we go.
With Marcus Rashford often favored at left flank and Anthony Martial the only other recognized centre-forward in the squad, Weghorst should have a role in the team’s reconciliation of the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League with the Premier League.
Weghorst returned to form at Besiktas, scoring eight goals and providing four assists in 16 games
However, it remains to be seen how effective Weghorst can be in this latest competition after an overwhelming stint last time out.
Weghorst scored 20 goals in the Bundesliga two years ago and let Besiktas score every other game but admitted the standard in England is different.
“After the Bundesliga I moved to the Premier League and I noticed, you can see it, it’s a different level again,” he said.
“It’s like the pace is really fast, that’s why I said it’s the biggest competition in the world.”
Weghorst has trained at United and could make his debut for the club when they play Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Wednesday.
