Footage has emerged of Zach Wilson being hit by a water bottle thrown by New York Jets fans after Monday’s win over the Buffalo Bills – prompting an angry response from his mother on Instagram.
Lisa Wilson shared a screenshot of the moment on her Instagram Story and wrote: “This happened after she won the game.” Punch him right in the head. “Awesome” with a sarcastic “thumbs up” emoji.
Wilson had become a focal point for the Jets when Aaron Rodgers was injured in just his fourth appearance for the Jets, suffering a season-ending Achilles tendon tear after being released by Leonard Floyd from the Bills.
The 24-year-old Wilson, who had expected to be the second choice to Rodgers all season, was instead right there to replace the 39-year-old, and despite inconsistent play, the Jets prevailed 22 in overtime: 16 against the Bills.
But some fans watching the Jets were clearly upset at the prospect of Wilson being their starting quarterback for the season, throwing a water bottle at him as he walked down the tunnel after a dramatic win.

At the time, it was unclear what exactly had happened to Rodgers, but coach Robert Saleh made it clear he suspected the worst. Those fears were confirmed on Tuesday when Rodgers was ruled out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon.
That means Wilson will now be leading the way for the Jets this year — and his mother took to Instagram after Monday night’s game to discuss the twist of fate that has thrust her son back onto the NFL stage.
“We love @aaronrodgers12. He was such a great mentor. Heartbreaking,” she wrote afterwards.
She continued: “Watching the kids do hard things is so much harder than doing them myself.” Not the evening we were expecting… Just trying to catch my breath [sic]. I am so overwhelmed with love and support.
“Literally hundreds of texts and DMs.” Some I know and many I’ve never met. I just know that I see you, I feel you carrying me, and I am so grateful to have such great people around me and my family. Thank you very much.’
Saleh, meanwhile, made it clear that Wilson will take the lead from now on, as reports suggest the Jets will sign a veteran quarterback to back him up for the season.
“I want to be clear, Zach is our quarterback,” Saleh said. “We have a lot of confidence in Zach. “We are traveling with Zach and are looking forward to seeing him.”
Wilson, the former No. 2 overall pick, was said to have followed Rodgers around like a “puppy” during the preseason.

Jets coach Robert Saleh has insisted that it is Wilson who will lead the team from now on
“You might think there’s a Velcro connection between Zach Wilson and Aaron Rodgers,” King told Mike Florio on Pro Football Talk in July.
“Zach Wilson is like the puppy next to Aaron Rodgers.” He’s always talking to him, he’s always trying to get information out of him.
“Because I’m sure – I haven’t spoken to Zach Wilson – but I’m sure Zach Wilson is thinking, ‘Hey, we’ll do this for two years, and in training camp in 2025, whatever, I’ll get a real, legitimate one “Chance to be quarterback again,” and that’s how he takes it.’
Rodgers had spoken glowingly about the 23-year-old, insisting he had made him feel welcome in New York despite Wilson’s previous comments.
“He was incredible,” Rodgers said in June. “He didn’t make my life miserable every day. “It was a pleasure working with him and I give him a lot of credit because it was a difficult situation he went through.”
